# EL CONSULADO NYC

> EL CONSULADO NYC is a New York-based Venezuelan artist-run collective reimagining the consulate as a creative magnet for visual arts, performance, and community engagement. Born from the absence of consular and institutional support for Venezuelan artists in the U.S. since 2017, the organization provides a living platform for diasporic cultural visibility, artistic exchange, and community building. It is fiscally sponsored by The Performance Zone Inc. (dba The Field), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

EL CONSULADO NYC operates as an alternative cultural embassy responding to the lack of institutional representation for Venezuelan artists in the United States. The organization is evolving from a pop-up art space (Phase 1) to a formal multidisciplinary cultural institution (Phase 2), with a permanent space planned for 2026.

**Alejandra Mandelblum** — Founding Member, Executive Director
Venezuelan-American multidisciplinary artist, educator, and cultural organizer based in New York City. Her practice operates at the intersection of visual culture, material experimentation, and community-driven collaboration, with a sustained focus on diasporic narratives and collective memory. Faculty member at Pratt Institute; exhibited in the United States and Mexico with works held in private collections across North America and Europe. Initiated the concept and formation of EL CONSULADO NYC and leads strategic development, partnership cultivation, and public programming.

**Helwing Villamizar** — Founding Member, IT and Operations
Venezuelan multidisciplinary artist based in New York whose installations, paintings, and research-based works reconstruct state infrastructures, civic symbols, and technologies through processes of material entropy. His work speaks to those who carry places they can no longer fully return to. Presented at MACCSI, MAO, Sala Mendoza, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. ## Programs & Projects

### KIOSKO
A modular sculptural installation that functions as a micro-vitrine and traveling gathering space for Venezuelan art. Conceived by EL CONSULADO and co-curated by Helwing Villamizar and Mariantonia Blanco, with a curatorial text by Michel Otayek. Designed as a lightweight, radicant, modular structure inspired by the Venezuelan neighborhood kiosk — *el kiosko de la esquina* — long a social condenser and site of community life.

KIOSKO presents 200+ small-format works (prints, books, zines, vinyl records, cassettes, postcards, stickers, pins) by 47 Venezuelan artists from within and outside Venezuela. Every purchase comes with a **Certificate of Participation**, reframing acquisition as a civic gesture of shared authorship — not owning an object but joining the work itself.

KIOSKO also participated in the **TD Bank Curated Spotlight** at NADA Miami 2025, presenting a two-artist installation by Alessandro Balteo-Yazbeck and Ana Alenso, curated by Kate Wong.

### Dialogues
Live Zoom dialogues connecting Venezuelan artists inside Venezuela with diaspora audiences. These sessions are free and open to the public, exploring themes of memory, identity, migration, and cultural practice.

### Redes as Resistance (MoMA PS1 Decentralized Symposium)
On February 14, 2026, EL CONSULADO participated in the Decentralized Symposium "Redes as Resistance," framed by LA ESCUELA___: *Education as Resistance*, presented in Homeroom at MoMA PS1 (through February 23, 2026). EL CONSULADO presented "An Everywhere Kiosk: Art, Circulation, and Diasporic Networks" — an image-led presentation introducing KIOSKO as a diasporic cultural device and network of resistance. The symposium connected artists, researchers, curators, and community initiatives across Latin America, the Caribbean, and diasporas in the U.S. and Canada.

**EL CONSULADO Unites Venezuelan Community Through Art** (June 12, 2025)
The organization launched community-focused programs to strengthen connections among the Venezuelan diaspora in New York through collaborative artistic practices. The original "El Consulado" installation took place at 1161 First Avenue, Manhattan, created through a grant from Chashama. Founding artist Alejandra Mandelblum: "It's like a trip down memory lane, not so much to the country itself, but to what it was, to how we grew up. And with that creative energy, we move forward."

**EL CONSULADO to Debut KIOSKO at NADA Miami 2025** (October 14, 2025)
Announced as the first documented collective Venezuelan space at NADA Miami, presenting 40+ artists in a modular sculptural outdoor installation. EL CONSULADO: "Our objective is to experiment with values beyond traditional art market structures."
